Mohawks Rock

Hey everyone, I'm new here, just created an account after getting my first-ever mohawk a couple weeks ago, after having had long hair for several years. The hawk is only about two inches tall, because the main point of my haircut was SHORT!

In any case, I've been experimenting with putting it up, like you can see in my pic, but I tend to ride my bike a lot, and my bike helmet kinda ruins my spikes, especially in the back, especially on colder days when I wear a headband or toque under my bike helmet.

So I've been experimenting with what to do on those days. Sometimes I spike it in the mornings, and then ride my bike anyway, and just deal with wearing it largely flat all day at work. But a couple times, I have blowdried it down, just combing it straight to one side. That survives my bike helmet, and toque, pretty well, but it also feels a bit conformist or something, LOL. Like "business 'hawk". So, I'm looking for other suggestions! What do you all do when you need to wear your hawk down for whatever reason?

FWIW, the hair on the sides of my heads is not completely shaved, just cut pretty short. When I go back to the stylist for a touchup some time soon, I think I'm gonna ask her to go even shorter on the sides, so it's a bit more extreme.

Maybe you can put it up when you get to work or something? leave early enough and what not... when it's taller you can avoid spraying the base (roots) and I've seen hawks bounce up after being squished. But at this length idk how to make it survive under a helmet ;(

This is a tough prob Kage....I am having a similar problem with winters up here in Canada cause it would be nice to wear a toque or hat with the cold, but then it messes my hawk. I have put the same question out there to the members so hopefully together we can come up with some possible solutions.
I usually cut my sides to a #1, which is nice, cause it doesn't leave you completely shaved, but is short enough to really highlight your hawk and not show the bare skin of your head too much, so you could certainly try that. If you are a bit hesitant then cut it to a #2 to start with.

If your worried about not being "extreme" enough or feel too conformist with it down, think about this.

Worrying about your hair inst too extreme now is it? and your more likely to look like a tool shivering your ass off with your hawk up when you could be warm in a hat. If its cold i just say eff it and smash it under a warm hat.

Thanks, everyone! Lorelei, that's good to know. I do plan on growing it longer/taller; I just needed to start with something short after having a long ponytail for years.

The helmet/toque/etc seems to mostly tend to flatten the spikes on the back of my head. The top spikes get messy, but mostly seem to stay standing. I wear them pretty messy, anyway. Dan, I'm not sure exactly how long my sides are in those terms; I went to my wife's stylist who did it all by hand, scissors and straight razor. But I like the length in your profile pic. If that's a #1, mine are probably at a #3 maybe. It's okay for now, but I'll definitely want to get them closer to a #1 later.

Nahtch, haha, yeah, I suppose. I think I'm not actually _too_ concerned about extremism or conformity; I just wanted to do something unusual that I'd never done before, and now that I did it, I love it and am just experimenting with what I can and can't do with it. Nine times out of ten, I'd rather be warm in a hat than cold with my hawk up. But there are some occasions... ;)
