As far I remember, the various versions of the bible (there are four differing versions that scholars argue over, never mind all the variations that happen with each edition where sections and passages get removed/re-added & wording changed.) that were compiled together from various accounts and stories by order of a king around 900 years ago.
He wanted a new religion of his own, to promote a monotheism and himself under it as ruler with the backing of a single 'god' - compared to existing religions in his region that were polytheistic (many gods). Obviously, before he got scholars to build it up and it became widespread, most people never knew anything of it until a lot later when people started traveling further abroad and it got translated to other languages.
Most of the world, for most of all time, never knew of this particular religion...but then there are thousands of them. The problem is, we get taught one of them and indoctrinated into it and forget that it's no different than any of the others made and taught by people throughout all history. Ra the Sun God, anyone? How about the FSM? =]
Whenever someone gets me upset, I just look down at my "WWGGD?" braclet. Then I shove a rake in whoever made me angry and I shit in their mouth.
The problem with belief systems (including Atheism) is that they lead to feelings of superiority. ( i.e. My belief is better than yours.) At best, this gives rise to mere tolerance which basically means "I will allow you and your belief to co-exist with me." However, that is not true acceptance. Acceptance of people who are different than us, as long as they are not violent and are not ACTUALLY harming anyone, is what is required of society to break the chains of the medieval philosophical templates that have held us in bondage for the last 1700 years or so. By acceptance, I mean to truly respect and diligently try to understand others way of life and thinking. By no means does this mean, we have to change our own way of life; just simply respect others. People who disrespect you, are displaying their own ignorance and servitude. This should provoke sympathy, or at worst pity. Never anger. This is the ideal way of life, in my opinion.
Also, you guys rule. I would love to have a mohawk if I could.
Thats all very insightful!
Why can't you have a mohawk?
