I'm sitting in my class, putting on some punk music, people really fast reallise it is punk, and begins to complain, and they say all kind of shit about it is bad music and it sounds like shit and: "shut that! we want to hear some good music like lady gaga and some kesha!" what the fuck is wrong with people??? I try to explain them that all they sing about is sex and love(not that it is a bad thing) but 99.99% of all popsongs are about love/sex, pop has nothing really useful in it, it is just bullshitmusic from rich bastards, but I see that the most people in my class, in my school, everywhere already are dead, they are trapped in the manipulated media-world where music that earns big money is the only good thing.. And when I try to explain it to them, they just say "your music is shit"... but I'm still alive
punk is the real good music.

Music and messages in it are two separate things.
I think the people in your class are listening to the sound of the music & voices. They're not interpretating the meaning of the lyrics. Two very different things. Some people don't hear the words, but just go with the beat & melody of a tune.
My dad was like that. He had very strong opinions on what was 'good music' but it wasn't about the lyrics for him, but the melody.
If you discussed the points of the songs without the music backing them, then if the points are valid, they should hold up to discussion with your class. But you shouldn't expect to convert them to liking the music style. The music sound is just a vehicle in helping putting across the ideas, which is what commercial musics uses too. There's no doubt when you get a melody you like AND the tune contains lyrics with sentiments you agree with, it has a special impact.
But the style of music shouldn't be the important thing to convince others of, it's the meanings in it. And yes, I do agree, most of mainstream media (music/films/TV) often focus on a formula of love/sex (& violence) and the themes get very boring after a while with just rehashing and no variety or complexity in topics.
i feel the same way. mainstream is completely dead, and people who love it just cant seem to see that there is little musical talent there. all mainstream music kinda sounds the same now. computer beat, auto-tuned voice, uh i think thats about it lol.
some good discussion came up there = ) thank you all for that..
and cool I'm not the only one who think this way...
I'll tell you what's wrong with them: their "we like whatever our idols and peers tell us we should like" mentality. I bet that, if they've had done some research without the fear of becoming outsiders, quite a few of them wouldn't ever have picked pop music all by themselves. And I bet some others don't give a shit about music and/or can't even recognize what they like without somebody pinpointing it, for them it's fine as long as everybody else likes it. /rant
