gladiator helmet / punk mohawk?

I've been thinking of experimenting with my hair. I usually just shave it really short but I want to try out a mohawk. I want my hair to look like those gladiator helmets but not too long and I don't want to be completely bald on both sides I'd still like there to be some hair.

That was the best example I could find of someone with the actual hair

Any tips on how I should grow my hair?

erm.. your hair will grow all on its own and then you shave it except for the middle bit.. then tada! you have a hawk

Should I just let my hair grow really long and then shave it or should I get mini mohawk and let it grow? I don't want to get those generic looking mohawks that make you look like the guy from the Little Rascals if you look at it from the front

you need it to be at least twice the length you want the sides to be then you can shave the sides to the length you want and youll have your hawk a smidge longer.. from there you let your hawk keep growing and keep the sides at the length you want.. but it will work either way, you can do it like that and start with your hawk small or you can grow it all out and then cut it ...it doesnt matter, its all personal preference
