Mohawks Rock

What's the best way to start a mohawk from plain uncut hair?

I've been going for a while now (about 3 months I think) without my 'hawk, and to be honest, I feel almost naked without it. So I wanna get it back again, but I don't know when I should start it. I was just gunna let my hair grow out to about 10 or so inches (the longest I've ever even gotten my mohawk is 5 inches) and the cut it into a mohawk (by a professional barber, everytime I do it DIY I fuck it up horrendously, and have to start over). So I was just wandering, when do you guys think I should start it? Right now it's only about 1 inch.

Whenever, it is easiest to start it at a short length, because you can clearly make out the line of where it should be, but some people prefer to wait and get it when it is longer.
It is all personal preference, but shortest is easiest.
I guess it kinda comes naturally, usually i cut mine @ 5 inches of uncut hair and it turns out almost perfect. But yeah likeSegadoway said, having it shorter and cutting it will make it SO much easier.
if you fuck it up short versus long, then you didnt waste a year of growing it out..

I cut mine grown out, so i split one side and tied it off then i split the other side and tied it off. Then i had my friend help me straighten it and whatnot, then i chopped off the pony tails and grabbed a no. 3 buzzer. What was left was about a footlong chelsea hawk, I ended up triming it to 7 inches...

Either way, good luck. :]
I started with 1-2 inch hair, like a regular person because you can easily mark out where the shaving line will go. Plus, if you start off short you can watch it grow, and that's half the fun.
Let it grow really long all over. Then pin the top part, and cut in half. Just shave around the ears - and in no time you'll have a sweet mullet!
