Mohawks Rock

What do you think of punk within the last 5 years? Wether you think its too mainstream now, or just as bad ass as ever, I want to hear what everyone has to say.

Although I do not consider myself a punk, I have mixed opinions about it. I hate how most people consider every kid with a sum 41 T-shirt and an odd sort of hair cut a punk (thanks to MTV) But, I also respect the people who consider punk a mindset/ way of life, and not a fashion trend.

Anyways, I want to hear what you think. (even if it's telling me that I don't know shit about what I'm talking about)

that is the understatement of the century. haha
PUNK IS DEAD - Crass

Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.

Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.

Well I'm tired of staring through shit stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.

And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.

PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.

(and they thought up with this song in 1978)
This is a long shit. Whats wrong with punk today its turned into clean happy mother approved fun theres no more piss in it. Whats wrong with punk isnt what the system did its what the ''punks'' did they got soft. How many fuckers on this site alone act nice and happy and try so hard to be friendly and prove their good people. Punks not clean its dirty being a punk is about being worthless and being hated for being you. Punk comes from the street. When you listen to a punk song can you relate to it. I can. I know what its like the anger depression confusion helplessness the emotions that wrote the songs you listen to. Getting arrested, getting wasted, sleeping in the park, getting threatened by crack heads with guns and knives, friends turning into junkies and overdosing thats my life thats what punk is its all the shit in this world. Its living in the hell the system creates. And fighting the system because of that. But whatca fuckers gonna do? Debate it whos a punk what is punk who gives a fuck. Punk isnt for the kind hearted for the weak its for all those loud mouthed assholes that just wont die. Is punk dead i dont fucking care dead or alive im still getting fucked up and going to shows. Im still skating down the street with an american flag union down. Im still saying fuck you to cops. Wether that makes me a punk or not i dont know or care. I listen to punk cause i feel the same shit now that punks did then. What about you do you feel it, fuck you, either toughen up or fuck off.
I guess it would surprise you that some people are happy with what they are doing with their lives.
Gutters, shows, beer, college, whatever makes them tick. Punk is only what you make of it, nothing more, nothing less.
Punk isn't about being a drunken hobo drug addict that nobody likes. It's about being yourself. You can still be a nice person, just don't compromise your beliefs for anyone. It's not about being an asshole, its about being you. It sounds like your trying to fit into the punk lifestyle. Is that really you? Or are you trying to be a punk?
musically i think its sucked
and there are alot of people 'in it' who probably wouldnt have been 20 years ago but i guess that goes with every real subculture.
I don't think it's "dead". It's just a lot more local now, which, I won't lie, I quite like. Though it is mainstream at the same time... in the way that people will often mix it up with things that are totally different, like emo, etc.
I came upon a shirt on Hot Topic's site that said "Punks not dead, it just sucks now". That really pissed me off... after all, they aren't local at all, they're just a big company that's owned by the same people that made Hollister (which comes as a surprise to most people).

I don't think Punk will ever be dead as long as there are local bands and as long as people keep it alive for what it really is no matter what other people may confuse it as :)
Actually, everything you read on the internet isn't true about hot topic.
Unless you work there, you have no grounds to make false claims like that. I've heard them all. Hot Topic is it's OWN company, and owns Torrid stores (the plus size section).
Each store carries merchandise specific to it's location and according to what sells, so one store in new england (mass/ct/ri area) could carry tons of DKM and Big D and the Kids Table shirts and another store in FL might not have any. Also, they pay attention to tours and big shows, and do follow those too with similar merch.

Those shirt ideas are sold to the company by employees and some customers. Don't like it, don't buy it. They won't make a second purchase order.
I dunno who said it - but it was this:
"Punks not dead, its just taking a nap"
...My computer just died before I could press "enter" to reply, haha, so I'll retype it..

Sorry for the "Hot Topic is owned by Hollister" thing; I thought I remembered looking it up and finding that, but I must not of, I just figured it sounded pretty right because they're both big companies, ya know?

I've bought a few shirts there before, but I don't buy stuff there much because it's sort of expensive (except eyeliner :) ) , though the stuff lasts pretty long.

"The only thing that is really stupid about it are the "trends"... tutus. Fuck me."
Yeah, I think that's the thing I dislike, but I think almost every store has that, pretty much. The good thing is that the lame trends seem to go by quickly :) So that's good. Like the jocks at my school who decided mohawks were cool (I don't know if you could even call em mohawks, haha) for like a week before taking them off.
Who really cares who owns Hot Topic? It's a good place to buy band shirts. Even if their owned by the same people as Hollister that's not going to make me go to the trouble of finding somewhere else to get the shirts (if I lived near a Hot Topic that is).
Apparently other people care ^ ^ ^ cause I've seen it on here before.

I'm just offering out the correct information, being an employee and all. It's the stupidest thing when kids come in and start spouting off shit like that (in store, etc). The only thing that is really stupid about it are the "trends"... tutus. Fuck me.

The company is actually trying to move backwards a few steps and make each store feel more "at home" and independent from their neighboring stores, which is pretty cool.
