Mohawks Rock

never liked em, never will. in my eyes the sex pistols were just a 70's boy band. they were put together to make money for some dude. and the ramones... wtf did they do to get the popularity they have? neither of the bands started punk. no one knows who started punk, i dont give a fuck who "started punk" but as far as i'm concerned... it started way before the ramones and sex pistols even thought about playing it.

no argument about crass. but here, check out this video... it's an interesting therory about the start of punk:

Wow, that video was amazing. And not once did he mention any of the mainstream bands that are associated with punk, those be The Sex Pistols, The Misfits, or The Ramones. Or did he? Well, I don't think he mentioned them as part of it. Anyway, great video.
Yeah, just got to say, Bad Brains had a big hand in hardcore.
being punk isn't necessarily about the music
hell, it's not even about calling yourself a punk
just do what you want :P

it was "punk" rock, because it was coincidental and popular with (starts with p ends with ks and it's not pricks) punks back in the 70's

punk music is defined by some people thats caveman music thats loud, simple, and raw

some people like it more catchy

'some people like it more political

some people like it more MTV (but we know they're not punk)

and people have to pay the bills somehow :P
they just found an easier and more celebrity way of doing it

but personally, the power chords, incomprehensible lyrics, and catchy riffs is what makes me like this ramones and sex pistols, and newer stuff like NOFX

but political messages found in bands such Crass, Propagandhi are pretty freaking awesome as well

whatever you like i guess
if you want to go into the details you are gonna have to go waaaaaay back to CBGBs and the new york dolls etc

hardcore punk started waaaaaay before crass, with bands like black flag, bad brains, minor threat, MDC, SSD, DOA, DRI, the adolescents, 7 seconds, teen idles, and yeah lol, do some research people!
Uhh... you realize Crass started in '77, right?
As in, the same year Bad Brains and Black Flag started, and before all those other bands you mentioned...
yes but at the time i was being stupid, what i meant to say was it didnt start with crass the same as punk didnt start with one band, crass is just one of the many bands in that scene.
iv never been much of sex pistols guy, or a clash even, i like some of there stuff but never really did anything for me.

as for the ramones, they are one of my favorite bands, and i think a huge part of there success and i think so many credit the ramones because they where HATED when they first started, everyone and there mum had punk bands back then and none of them knew how to play however even these guys hated the romeones(the new york dolls told them to quit) yet they kept up the true punk spirit and didn't care what anyone thought and soon they ended up hitting it big.

as for starting punk lol, goes long before ramones and sex pistols.
+1
I think the sex pistols are alright, but i don't think they should be given as much credit as people seem to give them. I really don't know why or how they got so popular...
In my opinion, The Germs were the most amazing fuckin band to ever play in the 70's, and the Pistols can't begin to compare to that. Darby Crash was a genius.

as for the Ramones, I think they were fuckin awesome. And I think their sound was over alot of people's heads back then...
i like the sex pistols..dont really listen to the ramones too much..but thier okay.
I like the sex Pistols, but they didnt start punk. I'm not sure who did, i'm not sure if anyone is. but I know Iggy Pop and the Stooges were punk in the 60's, and I think maybe 50's but im not too sure, they went by a different name back then.
