Mohawks Rock

Well, I am gonna get my first mohawk on tuesday and today I have decided to see if this cheap gel that I have at home can even hold my hair up. I really do not have long hair, perhaps a little bit more than 3 inches on the top. So I go ahead and wet my hair, towel dry it, since that's what it says on the gel. I brush the sides of my hair that will be cut off out of the way. Now, I take a nice big glob of the gel and spread it into only the top front where I think the mohawk is gonna be. So I work it the hair a bit and it's not doing anything. Now, I get some more gel and put it in the same place as the previous glob. I now bend over and actually have my head upside down and it does help a little bit but as I raise it I notice my hair is curling at the tips. I look back at the gel, mega hold, my ass. Squeezing another glop into my hand and then into my hair. Yet, again repeating my process, and failing once more. After about 20 minutes of fighting with just the front part of the mohawk I decide to give up. Is this gel complete shit? If it helps it's water-based. Also, I have thick curly hair and that curls in large curls. Could someone explain the process of getting this hair to stand up?

Alright...Well, I guess now I wait till 2morrow and I'll post my results after. Thanks for the help everyone, you truly enlightened me.
just remember to dry whatever product you are using... haha it might help youuuuu!
I can't wait to see how it comes out! =D
definitely don't have wet hair when you try to put up your hawk.

i usually back-comb (combing in the opposite direction it grows) to kind of rat it up and make it stand up before i even put any kind of product in it. it gives it a nice base and usually i can get it to stand completely (i have a 7"inch hawk so this is quite an accomplishment)
then just hair spray so it will stay and comb the very outside to make it look straight and sleek.

i hate gel. i've never gotten it to work for me. bleh.

HAIRSPRAY4LYFE.
WORD!
yes i always backcomb too! but my hawk isn't really that tall but it does work pretty well ^^
Make sure you blowdry your hair when its up, or try using hair glue or spray.
elmers glue and hair spray gets stubborn mohawks up well. try it out.
get the elmers glue at the roots of your hair. spike up with a bit more glue... and hair spray over it. blow dry and you have a section done.
MY hair is a foot long now. Still growing it out. Anyways i use the cheapest hairspray money can buy. I've found the cheaper the hairspray, the stickier it tends to be. Anyways what i do is dry my hair completely. Then i rub it furiously with a towel to get it very static. This helps it keep its form and fills in gaps. I then bend my head down and spray it with my hairspray. I rub it into the form i want, this gets the basic shape of it. After that i hold up the part of hair I'm trying to put up at the item and spray it again. I then blow dry that. Repeat the last part until you get it all.
Alright well, my first day with a mohawk. I woke up at like 5:30am to start styling it. Took me 1 hour and 10 minutes to do so. The back was sooo hard to do. I kinda had the form done in like 45 minutes but my OCD kicked in and I began to perfect it. I did not find the got2be glued hairspray so I bought got2be unstoppable hairspray and it works just fine. It did not come out to be needle pointed due to my curly hair but it did have nice curl effect to it that I did not expect. I'l post some pictures soon, I just gotta get them off my friend's camera. But, I think I'll just style it this way, cause I don't want to straighten my hair and the curl effect is kind cool. Overall, everyone enjoyed it. Thanks for the help guys.
Actually it does make the mohawk look a bit thicker. But, I still think that I did pretty good for a first time.
