Thought this was a pretty good video with some interesting observations comparing social media and punk rock.
Figured right here on Mohawks Rock! would be the best place to get some insight from people experienced in both areas. What are your thoughts on the comparison?
When you look at any social media website, it's always limited to the vocal minority - the ones who post stuff, the vast majority never get involved. It's also often very self based, rather than caring about our own principles and others.
I think the difference that punk can be about fighting oppression, defending people's rights and fighting prejudice, standing up for the rights of the often marginalised causes in face of profit and popularity.
I question though how much punk actually gets the views across except to other punks. If it's limited to just the appeal of violence and rebelling without supporting causes - it doesn't really achieve much in the end to make life better for punks and everyone else.
In a way, I can see trends in some social media sites like 4chan that appeal to the baser nature of people and rile them up but which don't really plan any lasting change or good but instead offer social false glory by causing intermittant disruption.
I think social media is the future for just about everything. Music, business, art, media, politics, even utility companies are using socail media networks. It is a major reason why my record attemp got so much attention.I work at a media monitoring company, and we are branching out into social meda as well, so I think you could make a comparison with social media and just about anything else. I know one important thing punk and social meda have in common: they are both revolutionary. Everyone is trying to get noticed and become a part of it, and I still am, too!

These are all really great thoughts from it being able to be compared to everything to it being a way distract people. I just read this today and thought it was very interesting.
"Social networking is one large town hall meeting. Every blog, wiki, mashup poses real threats to hierarchies, which means that power is shifting. It used to be that The Corporate Gods decided ... and the peons accepted. But there has been a palace revolt, and the smart companies are trying to figure this out."
