It was U.S. Army paratroopers who first popularized the Mohawk during the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944. (See details in my accompanying blog entry on this Web page titled "The Military History of the Mohawk." Newspaper, magazine and newsreel photos introduced the entire world to this startling haircut, supposedly designed to frighten the enemy.
