Mohawks Rock

17th Airborne Division paratrooper in World War Two.

This Mohawked paratrooper in the now-defunct 17th Airborne Division prepares to board a plane somewhere in liberated north-central France on May 24, 1945, in the "Operation Varsity" combat jump across the Rhine River behind enemy lines in Nazi Germany just 45 days before the end of World War Two. It was courageous paratroopers like him who first popularized the Mohawk as a gutsy and highly visible demonstration of military esprit de corps during the Second World War -- later copied by teenagers throughout the world.
