What is the best technique for putting up fans and liberty spikes?

I have a seven inch fan I style up in the middle then I have a few 5 inch strands I spike on the sides. I'm new to this so I don't know too much about styling my hair. I style mine now by combing towards my head for base structure and I then use got2b glued freeze spray and dry it with a hair drier, but it doesn't stay up all day. My buddy used to have an 11 inch 'hawk, I asked him what he thinks I should do and he said I should used elmer's wood glue. Does anyone know some good techniques?
