Mohawks Rock

Hi. It's my first post here. If I got to do an introduction topic somewhere, just tell me.

Well,

Finaly decided to get myself a mohawk. It's a short one, don't want it long.

Mohawk don't have the best reputation in france so I think it's better to start slowly. Anyway.

I'm now wondering how to maintain the look. Not on how to make it stand, or how to clean it because, this I already knowsince a loong time. But I still wonder how to keep the sides neatly shaved.

My hair on the sides is about 2/3 mm long. I don't want it bald, but I surely don't want it to be too long.

So, how to trim the sides ? How often ? (I believe once or twice a month)

-- At home with an electric hair clipper or razor ? But how to be sure not to cut the hawk itself so I don't screw the whole haircut ??

-- Manual Razor ? Yeah but no, because I don't want the sides to be bald.

-- Hairdresser ? Yes but how often and how much does it costs ? It can't be the cost of a regular haircut since the guy will just use his clipper to trim an already made and shaven Mohawk...

Frankly, I think that a badly maintained mohawk makes you look like a bum, a retard or a drug fiend. (Yeah, there's a lot of homeless mans who wears mohawks in france). And I really don't want to screw my hair....

I srearched on the internet, google, youtube. you get advises on what kind of hair gel/glue and more to use, style but not trimming....

Thanks.

lil update. Bought a electric clipper (Phillips QC5130)

I wonder how to properly use it.

From bottom to top of the head, stopping just before the hawk ?

Parralel to the hawk, using the side of the mohawk as a guideline ?

And what about the back of the head ? Can use a hand mirror, but still It's hard with only two hands... And, as luck is always not on my side, the bathroom mirror is installed way too low for me (I'm tall 1.89 m). I gotta bend my knees and back to have my head on the middle of the damned mirror. And NO, there's no way to fix that.

Would be nice if someone would help me on that. I really don't want to screw up my hair, and my wallet. I don't think I'm the only one to have a mohawk with hair that grows on the side on a Mohawk forum...

Try shaving the sides with the 'hawk up, depending on how much product you use the clippers might not be able to chew through it. You pretty much have to do it by feel

Buy an electric 'hair stylist's' trimmer a decent one like a Wahl. Practice makes perfect... I've had my hawks cut but 15$ stylist and twice a had to cut it off myself and start over because they did such a bad job. I've had my brother trim me up for years and had girlfriends cut it for me to... but if you have a steady hand you will be better than money can buy for a trim... Start by cutting as much as you can in front of a mirror, cutting from side burns up to the hawk and as soon as you get as close to your hawk without cutting it roll the trimmer away from your head in as fluid of a motion as you can. Get as much as you can in the mirror, then get a digital camera, tripod or chair with some duck tape and a cable to plug it in to a tv... park your ass in front of the tv with the camera behind you and finish it up in the same way. Have you hawk up if it's long other wise it's a pain to hold it out the way. And again... practice makes perfect, I've fucked up plenty of mine but now I can cut it perfect.

If you're unsure of how to make it work, have a hairdresser shave you a mohawk first. Because hairdressers apparently are used to people not being able to articulate what they want done with their hair, and seem to give everyone pretty much the same haircut, regardless of directions you give I recommend you bring a picture of what you want your hair to look like.

Once it's been shaved once, it's very easy to just keep the sides short with the electric clipper/razor, or to have a friend do it.
