I have always done non-perm hair dye, but here is a longer post that starts out talking about Manic Panic and then turns into a big discussion about coloring.

Also since some people use gelatin for spiking thought I'd throw this alternative out there.

I've used both, jello as a way to spike my hair though, not to color it.

It isnt bad for your hair, but the amount of the kool aid you need to properly dye your hair is roughly more expensive than just buying dye. Not to mention dye lasts longer and you wont get covered in bugs when you leave the house.

The only non-hair product I would recommend for using as hair dye is food coloring, but it isn't very vibrant.

My friend and I once used kool-aid to dye her white bunny blue. The color barely took, only his undercoat turned a light blue while his outer fur stayed white (it actually turned out pretty cool lol) but for actually dying hair its complete shit and a waste of time and money. Spend the $7 on a jar of punky colors if your concerned about damage. The dye leaves your hair feeling better then before you put it in and it smells amazing!
