Mohawks Rock

okay, so i've finally decided "fuck it, i'm getting a 'hawk". and i told my mom that just because she hates it if i come home one day looking different (i just like to "warn" her in advance i guess) and she kind of freaked at me. (which makes sense lol)

but.. i'm graduating college in may, and i'm looking for a full time job in my field of work. my mom thinks getting a mohawk will really lower my chances of getting hired for a good job. she says i've already got enough agaisnst me with my piercings and hair colour, i don't need to make my chances worse. however, im going into Social Service Work.. this is a field that's supposed to be accepting of everyone and completely non-judgemental. soooo i do think i could find a job, no matter what i look like.. in a perfect world. i know people do have their own personal stereotypes and stuff so that might make it hard for me.

i just really can't make up my mind here. i NEED a job, especially in this field because i now have a diploma for it. and im trying to save up to move out. so i don't want to ruin my chances of getting a job. but i want to be myself and do whatever i want with my hair.

what do you guys think??!

get a job, then get a hawk. i work as an accountant. when it's down you can't tell i have a hawk...looks like a very short little bob. but it's a very normal color (i've found people react less to the style and more to the color) and i have no facial piercings. also- i've been at my job for five years and i'm second in the company...that probably is why no one raised any fuss. the reality of it is when you are first outta college, you have to prove yourself on the job market, no matter what field you are in. if you want to start a career, take the piercings out, dye your hair brown, and make sure your resume is perfect. in a few years after you are making decent money and have proven you know what you are doing, slowly start letting the freak look back in.....if your sense of self is completely wrapped up in how you appear outwardly, go find a mall job that doesn't care how you look and enjoy living with mom.

i know that seems harsh, but it is the reality of things. i spent several years in what i called spy mode...fitting in with the way the world expected me to look, knowing it had nothing to do with how well i did my job. it sucks that people make assumptions about how someone is (or isn't) based on their appearence, but we all do it. i'm much more likely to talk to someone who has a green mohawk than i am the sorority/frat member with their preppy khaki's on....but i've learned the green mohawk may not be an artist, but instead a junkie, and that greek pledging preppy has every japanese horror movie ever made on dvd.
I've been working for 3 years now and I just got my hawk. Most of the guys at work went like: wtf dude? While the guy second in command said something I didnt get whole line of, but it was something like "Its good to see the youth take initative and do some blabla". I think he reffered me to as a easter chicken tho.
get the job first :) then get them used to the fact that you change your hair a lot and then it won't come as a big suprise for them when you turn up with the hawk from hell , your ability to get THE job you want will be easier without the hawk , it sucks I know but those are the cold hard facts , and good luck BIS :)
