Hi Tank Boi,

The different gauges are for a number of reasons: Some players choose their string size due to the difference in sound. The thicker gauge produces a more "bassy" sound and the thinner gauge produces a more "trebly" sound. A thicker gauge is also more appropriate if a guitar is detuned (to counteract the decrease in tension due to the stings being slacker).
In addition, you'll find it easier to play left hand bends (assuming you're right handed) with a lighter gauge. On the negative side, it's more difficult to play with your right hand (with a pick) with decreased tension.

You can get lower action using a lighter gauge. The string takes up less space which enables you to get it closer to the fret wire / fretboard.

right on, what would ye' say teh, idk, "generic" sizes for thicker and thinner strings?
my pack says "RDE-10" i'm not sure what tat' means exactly, then is says '10 13 17 26 36 46' pretty sure those are the sizes?
Hi Tank Boi,

I'd say gauge 9's (009, 011, 016, 024, 032, 042) are "average" or "generic" in standard tuning. (Although that's only my opinion and some folks might disagree) All the different brands vary and there are more hybrid sets available these days. I remember there used to be a gauge 007! What an old bastard I am!

My own personal preference is gauge 8's in standard tuning (008, 011, 014, 022, 030, 038), 9's in Eb, 10's in D and 11's in C#. I have relatively small hands for a dude, so I don't see the point in using gauge 11's in standard tuning to get a "killer tone" and end up with tendonitis everytime I play.
