Mohawks Rock

Well, I am gonna get my first mohawk on tuesday and today I have decided to see if this cheap gel that I have at home can even hold my hair up. I really do not have long hair, perhaps a little bit more than 3 inches on the top. So I go ahead and wet my hair, towel dry it, since that's what it says on the gel. I brush the sides of my hair that will be cut off out of the way. Now, I take a nice big glob of the gel and spread it into only the top front where I think the mohawk is gonna be. So I work it the hair a bit and it's not doing anything. Now, I get some more gel and put it in the same place as the previous glob. I now bend over and actually have my head upside down and it does help a little bit but as I raise it I notice my hair is curling at the tips. I look back at the gel, mega hold, my ass. Squeezing another glop into my hand and then into my hair. Yet, again repeating my process, and failing once more. After about 20 minutes of fighting with just the front part of the mohawk I decide to give up. Is this gel complete shit? If it helps it's water-based. Also, I have thick curly hair and that curls in large curls. Could someone explain the process of getting this hair to stand up?

you are using WAY too much gel. start off with slightly damp hair and use a small amount to start off with. or even start with dry hair.
Alright, well I need to try it again then, because I've been watching videos about spiking mohawks and all I heard was more of this and more of that. So I assumed more gel = more hold. Thank you for rapid response btw.
Mines about 3- 3 1/2 inches too and I use hairsprayyy.
Got2b freeze spray works wonders for me and a LOT of people on the site. Ive been able to get my hair to stand straight up at 11 inches before. ^^

Most gels weigh hair down so much that it just flops over, especially with wet hair. With gel less is deff more.
When ever you do your hair make sure that its 100% dry. The excess water will just be more weight to put up and dry.

This is basically the same thing, the only things I do differently is that I 1. wet my hair then blow dry upside down to help the roots stand up. 2. I fan my hair using a flat brush. 3. I use spiker gel for the finish. =]
Mine stays up for 3ish days at a time. Mostly because I feel gross if I don't wash it after that.

Last but not least, look around here! There are a LOT of people and fourms that can help.
richard povian and his povian method, he is god.
Alright I tried the gel again, perfectly dried hair, and it just weighs my hair down and it makes flops over. I need to hit up Walmart and find some of that hairspray and gel. If that's not available what hairspray should I opt for?
Gel is rather shitty for your hair. You really don't need that much.

Try other products like waxes, hairspray, and glues.
And the drier your hair the better, cause you should be drying the product to keep it's hold, not the product and your hair...cause if its damp it WILL fall. So, dry your hair, put a bit of product in it, hold it up, and take a blow drying to that baby!!!

(and I have intensely thick and curly hair, and i can make mine pin straight, especially using hair spray, so it is possible!!!)
Suave 10 works wonders too. All the cheap stuff i've found work the best
Would it be harder for me to style the mohawk since I have curly hair or is the hairspray gonna eliminate that problem too?
If you have curly hair I would invest in a flat iron, that'll make things 10X easier on you.
The got2be stuff is like everywhere, walmart, grocery stores, cvs, wallgreens, ect. Its pretty common. You shouldn't have too much of a hard time finding a can. =]
you're weighing it down...
Hmm. I wondering if I need to straighten it, because the curl itself isn't too strong. I guess I try it without the straightener and then if it doesn't hold up then I will go ahead and use it. I really don't want to damage my hair. Also, I noticed that some hairsprays have different kinds of holds, which one should I get if the got2be isn't around.
Dear, if you have a mohawk avoiding damage can be difficult. =/
But there are remedies!

Super Ultra Maximum Hold!! =P ..basically the strongest you can find. :D

I'd deff go out of my way to find the got2be though.
