Mohawks Rock

So, today, i was sent home from school for my "distraction."
hahah, i laughed in my principles face when he only referred to it as that.
I had my mohawk 4 months at the end of last year and not a word was spoke of it.

fast forward to this year.
second week of school, i'm sitting in the lunch room when i notice a "rock band" flyleaf on it. Ive never liked this band but i found it funny that people considered it "hardcore" and tthey were on school milk cartons. What the .......*a hand is placed on my left shoulder* FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCKKKKK *principles face appears to my right, with his hand on my shoulder.

"sorry, sorry!" i exclaim
"well what you should be sorry for is that hairstyle"
"sucks for you, because im really not, there isnt anything in the hand book that states i should be, or that i shouldnt wear it or cant."
"well i better not see it up again, if you want to discuss this fu_the_ ( he pronounced it insanely funny. ) ill see you in my office"
"okay" i said happishly

after hoards of people coming up to me, asking me what he said and telling me it was bullshit that i cant wear it, i went home

i wore it up the next day. (today)

i was sitting in the office because they accused me and my girlfriend of trying to skip school, when we were trying to give her friend a pair of pants, it wasnt the "right parkinglot" we pulled into her parkingspot and they said we were trying to skipp.. it was before school started, and if we were skipping why were we in her parkingspot when they pulled us over, whyd we come back to the school lot.. anyway, besides the point

im sitting in the school's office and the "principle" Edds walks in. ahahah. "What'd i tell you 'bout that hair boi" (lol, im from mass and i moved to TN, that could be a small exaggeration, but it was like that, lol )
"uh not to wear it?"
"come to the hall"
"i thought i told you not to wear it"
"you did, i want to discuss this fuRtheR " lol i totally put emphasis on the rs
"too bad, we arnt discussing this further...fu_the_"( i nearly shit myself laughing"

we went to his office

"there's nothing against this in the rules"
*whips out handbook*
"let me see"
"look, under hair, it is not to be sprayed or died in unnatural colours.. and mine isnt look under distractions, it clearly says clothing accessories, and my hair is not an accessorie or clothing. "
"hmm, well right here it says i can send you home"
"and right here it says if im not obeying the dress code, and i am"
"then i can put you in ISS until you decide to wash it out or whatever"
"im not doing either"
"then im calling your parents"
.. i gave him my number and he yelled at my mother and my mother said whatever, ill sign him out if your going to bitch..
"see, the problem is, that people with colour in their hair or who disobey the dress code are like, i cant have pink in my hair but he can wear his like that, thats bullcrap"
"mines not against the dress code, so your giving into peer pressure, lol" (yes i actually said lol)
"we are done here"

after we "talked" i sat in the guidence, for like 40 minutes, he comes out and i asked him what i do, and he was like
"wait for your mom to get here"
"my moms never drove in her life, what should i do"
"well you can go to ISS"
"if she calls and signs me out i can walk anywere off school grounds, cant i"
"when she gets here shell sign you out" ><
"shes not coming"
"oh, well why not"
"nevermind."

god i hate him..

ahhaha anyway, i totally owned him at the handbook rules, and in my 40 minutes of sitting in guidence, teachers and students alike told me its ridiculous, specially since i had it all last year, and hes just being power hungry. Idk if im going to start a petition because yesterday after lunch 400 people came up to me and told me i should..

idk if its worth my time. lol

oh and i caught him in several lies.

like "she announced it the first day in the auditorium"
"no no she didnt. "
"oh she was supposed to"

"i told you when you transfered here, that idk if it would be acceptable"
"i went 6 months with it"
"that was the end of the school year"
"6 months is not the end"

://

lol rant rant rant.

I'm glad that I never had to deal with that problem, since i didn't get a mohawk until I started college. Actually, I wish that I had gotten it early. Imagine me walking down the halls of a catholic high school in rural Ohio. I still have negative feelings towards my parents for sending me to that school. I skipped 30 days a year, the state max and still carried a 3.5 or better GPA.

Anyway, you need to fight for your cause.

When in HS, I fought for a different cause. I was the academic minded student and not the athletic minded student. All of the school's money for scholarship went to the athletes. So I took my cause to the principal, student body, etc.. But to make a long story short, I ended up still owing the school 11,000 when I was ready to graduate. At that point went to the principal one last time told her my grades, told her that I had been repairing the computers in the school's computer labs for all 4 years, and that I was tired of all the bullshit with sports. At the end of that meeting, the only thing that she could tell me was that I didn't owe the school anything.

So keep going to school with your mohawk. As you said, most of the teachers and students like it anyway. Don't give in to power hungry "so called" "figures" of authority. Show him that your only figure of authority is yourself =)
Id say do the petition. Fight it hard!
I think it's so sad that this happens and I find it noticeable that messages like this only seem to come from the US (I expect to be wrong on this, I just haven't heard anything like this from any other country so far). For a country that claims to be the greatest nation in the world it sounds extremely conservative, hypocritical and not ashamed of having double standards.

I, and plenty of friends, have had "strange" haircuts, clothes and behaviour all throughout high school and no teacher/principal/etc. ever complained (except when my hair was blocking views, but than I just got asked to move to the side or back row, or when my behaviour was really bad or dangerous).

I'm not saying that the Netherlands is that great, but at least people are let in their value, and a "authority figure" would not get away if they tried stuff like that.
Looks like you could use this site to get a petition set up.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/

I have not used them, but it looks like once you create it you can put it on other sites like myspace and of course here at Mohawks Rock!
if you are positive that there is nothing that can be twisted against you in the dress code then you can take it to the district and really get down to business. if it is not in the dress code then there is NOTHING that he can do about it including giving you any sort of punishment or sending you home. the most he can do is bring it up with the district and fight to have it put in the dress code, which you and the other kids can fight against with a petition.

good luck!!
I certainly agree with standing your ground and fully back a petition! Just be prepared that if you win, they will probably manipulate the rules to such a way in their favor that will limit your ability to wear it into school.

This however DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD NOT FIGHT IT. People in the US really need to start fighting bullshit like this whether it be power mongering principles in school or racist and abusive cops. Caving in and conforming to their idea has gotten us nowhere but a few steps back really.

A similar story I share a bit happened recently...like a few months ago when I had my longer pink mohawk. I was walking to the store at a late hour and went behind our plaza to cut off some time and possibly check dumpsters. I was about 3/4 of the way past the plaza and a car pulls through and obviously I knew it was a cop. No other car is gonna be creeping through all slow at 2-3am. I kept walking as I was doing nothing wrong at all. He rolled up next to me and asked what I was doing and I told the absolute truth that I was walking to the store up ahead to get a drink and a snack. He asked me my name and I asked him why he needed that? He got a bit snippy and said because he has a problem with people vandalizing and burglarizing back there. "Understandable" in quotes not because that's what I said but because to them and their cause it is, but I had no spray cans, did not flee or look suspicious beyond the fact that I looked different and was walking in an uncommon, but NOT private area at a late hour.

What kills me about this whole thing is that when I shared this with others I was harshly criticized for it saying I should have just went with his wishes to "make it easier on somebody in the future" which is so fucked up to even be said by ANYBODY from a punk background.

The only thing that changes the power structure is when WE are aware of how it works intimately, refuse it, and learn our rights and exercise them all the time no matter what.

So whether you get detained and possibly taken into custody for not answering questions and remaining silent and lose a few hours of YOUR time, or in your case possibly win and then lose anyway, at least the structure does not go unchecked and THAT is what is critical.

/rant

amusing story by the way that had me smiling.
Yeh... I live in the South too.. Georgia lol

I got ISS for wearing my Mohawk.. They didn't even give me a chance to wear it on the first day of school ya' know?

Funny thing is the principle goes to my friends church.. I'm wish I could walk up to his face and tell him fuck you.. but I don't wanna offend anyone =p

I wanna make a petition, but I dunno where to start.. sometimes you feel so hopeless =(
